Another Quiltastic Share!

How's everyone doing? I finally have another quilt post. I missed the sewing class last week, so I don't know if I missed any finished quilts. Here are a couple quilts to share from this week's class.

First, is this amazing hugemongous king size quilt by Susan. I love the floral fabrics. Rose prints and coordinates pair nicely. She did a really good job on this super pretty quilt. Ginny did the overall quilting in a feather like pattern on her long arm machine.

 This pattern could have so many looks. It's basically a center panel surrounded by borders. The corner details tie everything together so nicely! Thanks Linda for taking pictures for the blog, too!

             

 Linda also sent me photos of this scrappy quilt I made last year for my daughter's birthday. I got the pattern from Quilter's Home Magazine. Unfortunately, they no longer publish the  magazine, but you can get free quilt patterns here! http://www.quiltershomemag.com/patterns/index.html

 This quilt was a fun way to use up scraps. It's made up of 12 of these squares, shown below.

 Each square is 4 of these.(below). Sorry about the blurry photo, it didn't translate well in enlargement.  It was pretty easy. You start with a square of fabric, the black print in this case. After marking off the triangle shape, you just just start sewing on strips of fabric in a flip and sew manner. They go together fast, put 4 together and you have the X design.

Tea Towel Pillow, a Quilt, 2 Dogs and some thoughts...

 56 Mays. People are always lamenting the passing of time and here it is again, the end of another month. I've lived for 56 Mays and this one is over.

Target Tea Towels and an old throw Pillow

 One May for each year of my life. Did I cherish it? Did I enjoy it? Not especially, it just flew by like the rest of the months.

It had some pretty days, some gray days, some flowers bloomed, I watched the clouds and the sunsets, I watered the plants, I cleaned the house and I dreamed of projects as I watched tv.
  I talked to family and friends and I snuggled up with my dogs.

Pumpkin got under that quilt and wouldn't move and wouldn't look at the camera either!

Such is life--light and dark, day and night and mostly we live in our thoughts. Isn't that reality? A few minutes we live in the moment, the rest we spend in our thoughts. What do we need to do? How will we do it?

Looks pretty on the other side too!

Maybe that's why I like making things. For that time, you live in the moment and only in that moment. You have to think about what you're doing.. not what has been or what will be. So I keep sewing and painting and planting and doing.

Tinker wants to know why Pumpkin is so tired...

Those are my 'be here now' moments and I cherish them.

Mother's Day Apron--- Sewing and Quilt Sharing

  Mother's Day is Sunday! I forgot to take a camera to sewing class on Tuesday, but I'll have some pictures next week. For a mother's day gift I decided to make my mom an apron. I borrowed a pattern, combined some fabrics I had and came up with this! I hope she likes it!

 I thought the grandma cookie jar was a nice touch for the picture. I hope Mom doesn't see this before Sunday; it would ruin her gift surprise!

I used this Butterick apron pattern-- I combined details from a couple views to make the apron you see here. Isn't that bird fabric sweet?

I did the whole thing during one class. My friends were laughing at me sewing so furiously. It's been a while since I've made a garment and I just wanted it finished!

Happy Mother's Day Mom! You are a wonderful mom, grandma and great grandma! Love You!!!

 

I have also made quite a few sewing and quilt projects around the house. Besides making quilts, I like to make home accessories. Here are a couple to share---

This is a small quilt table topper. I got the pattern for this little octagonal quilt in Quick Quilts magazine a few years ago. The topper is pieced together, then the flowers and stems are machine appliqued on. I used various scraps to make this pretty spring quilt.

I arranged a couple of my knick-knacks in the photo. I learned something new, too. See that interesting silver thing? It's called a 'muffinerr' and it is used as a sugar shaker. I just like the unique, exotic shape  and details on this silver plated pretty!

 

Finally, I'm sharing my quilted pillow. My friend Weezie gave me this awesome orange butterfly fabric. It's a great combo of things I like... butterflies AND the color orange!

 

I made 5 large squares with triangle corners and 4 nine patch squares out of scrap fabrics. Most of the scraps had butterflies on them too. If you ever want some free quilt square designs, take a look at Quilter's Cache Quilt Blocks Galore for hundreds of FREE designs and instructions.

'QuilTuesday'--Sharing Sewing Class Projects

Hello!!! Before I share all the sewing projects. I wanted to let you know that one of my projects was featured on another blog. I made this precious painted toy chest using an old headboard.

Onto the sensational sewing shares--

It was another busy,productive day in the sewing circle class. There were a lot of sewing projects and quilts to show off! First of all, Diane finished her scrappy batik quilt and it's got binding and everything. Gorgeous!

 

 

 

 

 

 

                                       

Sharon has been sewing up a storm and finished this darling Heart patch quilt top. Love the sweet fabrics in this one!

 

 

Danielle has made a few of these patchwork bags in bright whimsical fabrics. She's varied the patch size to get different bag sizes. Fantastic colors and patterns in her work!

 I've made a couple of these bags from the same pattern. The large bag is perfect for quilt class. It holds a ton of fabric, a large quilt or supplies. It even works great for the beach or a weekend bag.

 

Mimi has started a quilt using the 'Dresden Plate' pattern.She's got some pretty fabrics and  bright color combinations for this project! Mimi likes to call them 'flowers', you can see why...

 

Linda has been making these cozy blankets. They're large pieces of fleece fabric. 2 pieces are fringe cut, then tied together. Great argyle fabric choice for this one!

 

Diane finished the batik quilt above, then started on these butterfly patches. They're made using freezer paper to cut out the many little parts. Then they are pieced together. What an ambitious project!

 

 Diane also shared this cute, cute, cute bird painted on window screen! She's going to sew it onto a denim tote bag. I need to get this painting pattern!



 

 

Not to be outdone by all the quilts and projects done in class, I thought I would share this quilt I finished a while ago.(Hey, it's my blog!) It's in my guest room and the quilt has a braid pattern. I loved finding all the fabrics, grading them from light to dark.   In my guest room, I  made the pillow case, the patched bolster, the covered headboard, the painted  chair.... I'll be sharing lots of these projects in future posts.

Quilt Share!

Tuesday was another day with the sewing circle. We were working furiously on our quilts and sewing projects. Sharon had 3 new quilts to share. She has been a busy lady!!!

She made this pretty 9 patch quilt above and this cool pattern below. Love the intertwined designs!

 

 

Sharon also completed a quilt to donate to charity. I took it outside to photo...

 

Bobbie has another quilt---

ready to add the binding. Such pretty soft colors and lovely design. Note the machine quilting, again by Ginny!

The quilting class was busy with lots of talented ladies. I hope to feature their work every week here. (Gals, don't let me forget to take a picture of your quilts and projects! )

Quilting and the Sewing Circle Show Off

Good Morning ! Welcome to Sunset Coast. Today is all about quilting. Every Tuesday I attend a class of fun women, our 'Sewing Circle'. We bring whatever project we want. Most of us quilt, some make garments, some just visit and talk. It's pretty much anything you want it to be and fun and therapeutic.

Whenever someone is finished with their quilt or quilt top, we pin it up for everyone to 'oooh' and 'ahh' over. Sometimes we pin up our quilt designs and everyone puts in their 2 cents and opinion on how things should be arranged or completed with borders and suggestions for binding or layout, etc.

 

Tuesday brought us these beauties to  check out...

 

Ginny made this gorgeous 'Fun in the Square Quilt'. She is our resident long arm quilter and did a great job on this one. The pattern of quilting is called 'Angel Wings'. Check out the detail on the back too!

 

Diane is working on this pretty, scrappy Batik quilt. She really has a knack with batiks!

 

Jasmin is finishing this Christmas table runner using holiday fabrics. I hope I can share the awesome tree skirt she already made to match.

 

 

Barbara finished her quilt top using a log cabin pattern. Love the modern fabrics and colors. The square arangement really has depth, like windows!



 

 

Cassandra pinned up her quilt squares in shades of blue to check out the arrangement. Louise, our teacher, contributed the nicely appliqued Greek letters. This lovely quilt will be finished up real soon!

 

 

 

Mimi completed this darling quilt made from her son's baby clothes. She's giving it to him to cuddle with . So sweet!

 

 

Lastly, I'm showing off the quilt made by Bobbie. Isn't it wonderful?

Bobbie made this Stars and Stripes pattern, for The Wounded Warriors Project. It will be donated to a worthy veteran. Ginny did the detailed long arm quilting for this also; love the freehand star design!

Quilting; My Favorite Quilt

 

This is my favorite quilt (that I made). It's from a pattern book called 'Double Dipity: More Serendipity Quilts' by Sara Nephew. Who couldn't love a quilt from this book?

 

 

     I learned so much making this quilt. I learned to fussy cut from fabric. The patchwork hexagons are made up of pieces all cut from the same part of the fabric. You end up with a beautiful kaleidoscope effect.

Even the little dark hexagons are cut that way from a different fabric.

I think I used 3 different 'square' patterns from the book and put them together. The fabrics unify the whole quilt.

 

I usually have it hung on the wall but I put it on the bed for this pic.

All the sewing is machine quilted and I finished the quilt with a simple 'stitch in the ditch'.

 

The book is great.. lots of patterns and lots of border ideas. I used the triangle idea from the book, but there are many elaborate patterns. I have to say though, this is not a book for real beginners, though I was only quilting for a couple years when I made this one.

 

 

Here is where I keep my scrap fabrics. It's an old secretary with a glass door. I have my Singer Feather weight machine on top. Looks like I need to organize it badly! Everytime I organize it, I go and mess it up anyways. Lately I've been making scrap quilts. No matter how many scraps you use, you never run out. They seem to multiply in that cabinet!
